Scorpionfisch

padi divecenter-private scuba guide-musan underwater parkScorpionfish can be found around the island of Cyprus, although they are not often spotted by divers as they are masters of camouflage. They are usually between 5 and 20 cm long, although some species can grow to 50 cm and weigh up to 2 kg. They are bottom dwellers, mainly found in rocky areas. Scorpionfish are sluggish fish that cling to the bottom as they have no air bladder and are found at depths of 2 to 200 metres.

They generally live as solitary creatures, camouflaged and waiting for their prey to approach. They feed on molluscs, crustaceans and fish.

The hard rays of the first dorsal fin and the spines of the gill covers are venomous. Symptoms of stinging include localised pain, swelling and redness at the site of contact, fever and difficulty breathing. It is therefore advisable to seek medical attention after contact.

Elpida Wreck – some impressions from your dives

The Elpida was a Greek container ship and her name means hope in Greek.

She is a good 70 metres long and lies at a depth of up to 30 metres.

The top of the hold is at 20 metres and the bottom at 27 metres.

The general spaces and the bridge are between 20 and 14 metres deep.

The top of the masts is at 10 m and the wreck stands beautifully photogenic upright on the seabed.

The fact that she stands upright on the seabed makes the Elipda a very photogenic wreck.

Come and see for yourself.

The unpaired fins bear small light blue spots. The fish grow to a length of 60 centimetres.

You can regularly see triggerfish on dives at Zenobia Wreck. Animals of impressive size now live here.

New dive spot for you – Pyla Reef

Cape Pyla Reef We have a new dive site in our programme which is especially interesting for guests from Larnaka, Oroklini and Agia Napa as the journey is very short.

This site offers bizarre rock formations with many small canyons rising from the bottom, making the dive exciting and interesting.

There are also small caves at the site which are safe to dive into as the entrance to the cave is safe and the exit is clearly visible. In addition, the different layers of the seabed combined with the colour of the rocks and the white sand throughout the cave and dive areas provide an impressive backdrop.

Marine life consists of starfish, nudibranchs, mussels, soft sponges and corals. There are schools of fish, occasional small rays and barracudas and the resident lionfish.

Pufferfish – A migrant from Red Sea

The pufferfish has migrated from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, where it is causing quite a stir. It can be found off Cyprus, the Turkish coast or in the Levantine Sea (eastern Mediterranean), where it is considered one of the most invasive species. The pufferfish has a strong set of teeth and plates, with which it bites not only crustaceans but also mussel shells. It is also extremely poisonous, both to humans and to larger predatory fish. The pufferfish reproduces quickly and appears to be very adaptable. For example, it feeds on marine animals that have become entangled in fishing nets, which can lead to huge losses in fisheries.
The pufferfish is actually quite a pretty sight. A spiny, silvery animal with many dots on the top of its body, it can live for up to ten years and grow to a length of one metre. If it feels threatened, it will swallow large quantities of water and inflate into a ball that looks much bigger than it is, spoiling the appetite of predators. more »

Musan – Underwater Sculpture Park

privaze guided dive-padi divecenter cyprus-musan underwater park

Marine life loves artificial reefs. They are places where marine flora and fauna find pleasant conditions.

So ultimately, Musan’s underwater sculpture park becomes a new home for marine life, and MUSAN is just that – the first underwater museum in the Mediterranean that is also a „work of art“ itself.

You want to be part of it? We are here for you.

Solo Diver / Self Reliant Diver or a scuba diving course to help yourself

Diving itself is a potentially dangerous sport, this means. it is dangerous to life!

This is what is written in many textbooks and in your beginner course you learned to always go diving with a buddy! This is because the diver enters an environment that is normally incompatible with human life.

Only technical equipment makes survival possible here. Overestimation of one’s own abilities, recklessness, poor or lack of training and lack of experience can lead to situations that put the diver’s life in acute danger.

But can the buddy system really help here? Or does it only pretend to be safe? more »

Lionfish in the coastal waters off Cyprus – A threat

An invasive species in the sea off Cyprus is the lionfish. Originally from the Indian Ocean, this fish is common in the Red Sea, but is now also found in the Mediterranean, first off Cyprus.

Divers who encounter a lionfish should not touch it under any circumstances. This is because the conspicuous spines contain a strong neurotoxin. The fish uses this to defend itself when it feels threatened. For humans, the poison is not deadly, but painful.
But these intruders are not only a problem for us humans, but above all for the entire underwater world.

Explore Marine Life – 2 guided dives – special offer

In this workshop we would like to show you life under water. The sea off Cyprus has a lot to offer, you just have to know where to look and what to look out for.

Our sea on our doorstep, like all the oceans of the world, has been used by us, us humans, for everything. As a larder, waste bin, raw material supplier. As a result, there was less and less for us divers to discover and marvel at.

In recent years, a rethink has taken place and protected zones have been created off the coast of Cyprus and artificial reefs have been built, partly through wrecks. These then gradually became a new home for the indigenous creatures under water.

In the course of time, species that „immigrated“ and even spread to such an extent that they became a threat to the local species also spread.
